How to apply for a Proxy Vote to vote at an Election
PROXY VOTE
If a Postal Vote is not convenient, or you have missed the deadline to apply to vote by post, you may wish to apply for a Proxy Vote. This is where you appoint someone to go to your Polling Station on Election Day and cast your vote on your behalf.
Please note that there is a requirement to provide a specimen signature and a date of birth on all completed application forms.
The collection of these personal identifiers is designed to deter misuse of the entitlement to vote and to help ensure that the votes included in the count have been completed by the persons to whom they were issued.
Failure to provide this will mean that the application will not be valid.
TEMPORARY PROXY VOTE
A copy of the temporary proxy vote application form can be downloaded here. This application form is only valid for elections to be held on one specific day.
Applications should be completed and returned to the Electoral Registration Officer at the Electoral Services Office, Barrow Town Hall by no later than 5:00pm 6 working days before an Election.
PERMANENT PROXY VOTE
Other application forms are available for the following persons to apply for a permanent Proxy Vote.
In most cases they will also need attesting by a relevant person otherwise they may not be accepted. Further details are available on the forms.
- Disabled
- Employment
- Attendance on an educational course
All the above applications for permanent proxy votes should be completed and returned to the Electoral Registration Officer at the Electoral Services Office, Barrow Town Hall by no later than 5:00pm 6 working days before an Election.
EMERGENCY PROXY VOTE APPLICATIONS
There are now two categories for Emergency Proxy Vote Applications which are
1. Medical Emergency - Where someone has become ill, admitted to hospital, receives a hospital appointment etc.
2. Occupation, Service or Employment - Where someone is called away for work reasons.
after 5.00 p.m. on the closing date for receipt of Proxy applications
Both of the above types of applications have to be countersigned by an appropriate person before returning to Electoral Services - details are on the forms. Applications made under 'Medical Emergency' need to be signed by a Doctor or Nurse and applications made under 'Occupation' need to be signed by your Employer.
Completed application forms for Emergency Proxies must be received in the Electoral Services Office by no later than 5:00pm on the Election day in order to be valid for the Election in question and to vote on the day.
Your application form must also be received and approved before you can go to the Polling Station to vote and you will be contacted about this.
