A GROUND-BREAKING programme of support to help residents and businesses in Barrow harness opportunities to thrive and grow is being developed as part of a major bid for government funding.
The innovative business support measures would ensure both individuals and small and medium sized businesses were able to make the most of major economic opportunities that exist in the area.
This could be through helping residents to start their own businesses, become self-employed or through the growth of community businesses - helping the area to become economically resilient and to ensure a strong recovery following the global coronavirus pandemic.
Members of the community are now urged to share their views on the proposal which would be delivered over a period of five years via a network of Resilience Hubs located in communities across Barrow.
It forms one of seven exciting projects that make up #BrilliantBarrow - an ambitious bid to secure £25 million of transformational funding from the government’s Towns Deal Fund.
Councillor Ann Thomson, the leader of Barrow Borough Council and a member of Barrow Towns Deal Board, said: “We have lots of existing opportunities in Barrow.
“We need to make sure everyone has the chance to benefit by ensuring they’ve got the skills, knowledge and systems they need.
“We also want to encourage new businesses to start up and move here. We have so many creative people in our Borough who may have a fantastic idea but don’t know how to turn it into a viable business.
“We want to support our residents to unleash their entrepreneurial spirit and develop new businesses and not for profit organisations.”
However, without the right support, businesses and people in the area may not be able to access these opportunities.
Councillor Thomson added: “We have enterprising people and enterprising businesses here in Barrow. Making sure the right support is in place to help them harness these opportunities is crucial.
“What we need now is feedback. Please take part in the online survey and share your views on this proposal so we can build a strong case to government to secure the funding we need though #BrilliantBarrow.”
Ideas and comments can be shared via the website brilliantbarrow.org.uk and by taking part in an online survey: https://www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/BBBSS20
A detailed business plan is being developed around each shortlisted #BrilliantBarrow project before a final bid is submitted to the government later this month.
