MORE than £4.5 million in financial support for businesses across Barrow has still not been claimed.
The money, which does not have to be paid back, is available to a further 408 businesses in the borough eligible for business support grants from the government.
They were introduced to help businesses during the global Coronavirus outbreak.
Business owners are being urged to get in touch with Barrow Borough Council to see if they are among those who can claim the one-off cash award.
Councillor Ann Thomson, leader of Barrow Borough Council, said: “We have already distributed grants to more than 800 businesses in Barrow totalling millions of pounds.
“But more than £4.5 million of this money remains. There are still hundreds of businesses out there that are eligible and we need them to come forward so we can make sure they benefit from this financial help as soon as possible.”
There are thought to be 1,226 businesses eligible for business support grants in Barrow overall.
So far, £9.245 million has been paid to 818 businesses in the borough.
Those eligible are:
- Small businesses which already receive Small Business Rate Relief or Rural Rate Relief. They can apply for a one off cash grant of £10,000 to help with ongoing business costs, even if the relief is 100 per cent.
- Businesses operating in the hospitality, leisure or retail sector. They can apply for a one off cash grant of £25,000 if they have a rateable value of between £15,000 and £51,000.
Letters have been sent to the business address of those thought to be eligible while a dedicated team of council staff have also attempted to make contact via telephone.
But the borough council does not hold contact details for all businesses thought to qualify for the cash.
Cllr Thomson added: “This is an incredibly difficult time for businesses and this money is there, ready and waiting to help them get through.
“Please check to see if you might be eligible so we can arrange a transfer to your account.”
To access the grants, businesses will need to supply:
