How to Make a Request for Information Under the Freedom of Information Act,Environmental Information Regulations, Data Protection Act

Freedom of Information ACT (FOIA)

Before making a request please read the FOI Policy that explains about accessing information held by Barrow-in-Furness Borough Council. Is gives background to the regimes governing access and explains what rights these give you to access our information.

All requests must be made in writing (for example letter, fax, e-mail, via the website) and must contain the following information:

  • Your name (name of applicant) and address for correspondence
  • Description of the information requested.

If the applicant is unable to put their request in writing the relevant assistance will be provided upon request.

Environmental Information Regulations (EIRs)

EIR requests may be made in any manner, including verbal requests over the telephone.

Data Protection Act 1998

All requests must be made in writing (for example letter, fax, e-mail, via the website) and must contain the following information:

  • Your name (name of applicant) and address for correspondence,
  • Description of the information requested.

You can print our Subject Access Request Form (PDF 38Kb).

You can also obtain a copy of this from by contacting the Council's Data Protection Officer.

Please complete this form and, together with proof of identity (copy of driving licence, passport etc.), and a fee of £10 (cheque or postal order made payable to "Barrow Borough Council", send it to:

If you are acting on behalf on a third party (including a family member) you are required to obtain signed consent from that individual.
