What is the Brownfield Land Register?

The Brownfield Land Register provides up-to-date, publicly available information on Brownfield (previously developed) land that is suitable for housing. The Council has used its Strategic Housing Land Availability Assessment (SHLAA) and the Local Plan 'Call for Sites' consultation to help identify all the Brownfield sites in the borough.

The register has been prepared in line with the Town and Country Planning (Brownfield Land Register) Regulations 2017 which requires local planning authorities to prepare and maintain a register of previously developed land that:

  • has an area of at least 0.25 hectares or is capable of supporting at least 5 dwellings
  • is suitable for residential development
  • is available for residential development
  • is achievable for residential development

The Council has compiled a Brownfield Land Register for Barrow Borough which can be viewed here.

Sites on the register can be viewed on the Council’s Web Mapping.

The Council intends to publish an update to this register quarterly.
