Listed buildings are those properties that have high historic or architectural value and are placed on a statutory list compiled by the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport under the Planning (Listed Buildings and Conservation Areas) Act 1990, on advice from English Heritage. Listing ensures that the special interest of the building is carefully considered before any alterations, either outside or inside, are agreed by the local planning authority.

Please contact Development Control staff for advice about any proposed alterations to a listed building that you may be considering. For more general information please contact Charles Wilton, Development Control Officer, on 01229 876553

Historic Building Grants are available to all historic properties, including unlisted ones, that are within Dalton, Central Barrow and St George's Square Conservation Areas and to listed buildings within Central Ward. For more information please contact Charles Wilton, Development Control Officer, on 01229 876543

Please note while every attempt reasonably possible has been made to make the information on listed buildings as accurate as possible, use of the information is at your own risk. Barrow Borough Council accepts no liability for omissions or errors in the data provided, the presence of absence of a building/structure on the list does not imply it is listed or not listed as the case may be.
