Barrow Borough Council is committed to providing a responsible waste collection service. Recycling is important because it reduces the amount of waste that we throw away and provides valuable products for manufacturing. This saves residents money by reducing the disposal costs and by providing an income to the Council.
Love Barrow Love Recycling Incentive Scheme

An Introduction to Recycling
Waste issues are becoming increasingly important in the UK. In the past the waste management industry of the UK has traditionally pursued the cheapest method of waste disposal, known as land filling.
Barrow will run out of landfill space in less than eight years time, unless we continue to RECYCLE more of our Household waste. If we continue at the present rate it would take less than five years to fill Lake Windermere with Cumbria's household waste.
What Can I Do To Make A Difference?
There are a number of things you, as a Borough resident can do to make a difference. Firstly, use these web pages to find out how you can RECYCLE your waste in the Barrow area. The links will give you details of services provided by the Borough Council and where you may take your waste for recycling.
However, there are many ways in which you can help Barrow to divert waste from landfill, not just through recycling.
- The first thing people should be thinking about is REDUCE the amount of waste that they produce, by shopping responsibly and selecting products which have LESS PACKAGING.
- Secondly, try to REUSE anything that you can. Take your carrier bags back to the Supermarket rather than getting new ones and reuse plastic bottles and boxes as far as possible.
- Thirdly, RECYCLE all of your glass, cans, paper, plastic and cardboard and take part in the kerbside Collection service.
