Litter Removal

Barrow-in-Furness Borough Council, through its Contractors BIFFA (GB) Ltd, operate a Street Cleansing Service throughout the Borough.  As part of the Street Cleansing Contract there are 10 Vehicles, 6 Manual Barrows and a total of 20 Operatives are employed directly in the Street Cleansing side of the Contract.  Their jobs are to sweeping of streets, removal of litter and removal of flytips, across the Borough.
 

Street Sweeping Schedules

The vehicles and manpower detailed above operate on a complex schedule.  Below is a summary of the frequency and nature of sweeping across the Borough:
  • Immediate Town Centre Area - swept daily with a permanent presence of a sweeper in the Town Centre;
  • Outer Town Centre Area - swept weekly and swept fortnightly with a mechanical sweeper which includes back streets;
  • Main Roads and Bus Routes - swept at least twice a week;
  • Areas with high concentration of Shops - swept daily before 9.00 am;
  • All Roads in the Borough - swept every five weeks by the large mechanical sweeper;
  • A number of Rural Roads - swept every 12 weeks;
  • Litter Blackspots - inspected daily by a Hit Squad, which is also used for the rapid removal of fly tips and litter in badly littered areas.

Approximately 780 tonnes of litter is removed from the Borough's Streets every year.  Barrow-in-Furness Borough Council's Street Cleansing Service currently has a Best Value Performance Indicator (BVPI) Rating of 20 %, which is 10 % better than the required National Standard.
