Introduction

The Planning Policy Section is responsible for preparing the statutory planning framework , through consultation with local communities, which sets the broad framework for acceptable development in the Borough.

Work is currently underway to produce a new Local Plan for Barrow Borough, for further details please visit our consultation page.

Local Development Framework (LDF)

The Planning and Compulsory Purchase Act 2004, introduced a system comprising a Regional Spatial Strategy (RSS) and a Local Development Framework (LDF). The Local Development Framework is a portfolio of spatial planning documents prepared by the Local Planning Authority.

More information on the Local Development Framework documents produced can be found on the LDF page.

National Planning Policy Framework

The National Planning Policy Framework (NPPF) including Planning policy for traveller sites was published on 27 March 2012. The National Planning Policy Framework sets out the Government's planning policies for England and how these are expected to be applied. The associated Town and Country Planning (Local Planning) Regulations came into force on 6 April 2012.

The NPPF requires local authorities to produce a local plan which sets out the strategic priorities for the area, this local plan should be based on up to date evidence about the economic, social and environmental characteristics and prospects of the area.

The NPPF is national planning guidance and replaces the majority of the earlier Planning Policy Statements, Guidance and Circulars.

Regional Guidance

The current RSS, which was adopted in September 2008, became part of the Regional Strategy (RS) in April 2010 . The Government have confirmed their intention to pursue the complete abolition of Regional Strategies shortly and included such a provision in the 2011 Localism Act.
