Kerbside Recycling and refuse collection service.

Barrow Borough Council's RECYCLING and refuse collection service will make it easier for you to RECYCLE  even more. This will help us reduce the amount of waste we send to landfill, and in doing so protect the environment. The Kerbside collection service uses green boxes for glass and cans. Paper can be recycled in separate boxes or using the polythene recycling bags. We use red bags for plasticand cardboard  recycling and brown bins for compostable garden waste.

The Council provides a number of recycling centres throughout the Borough.

Five different recyclable materials paper, glass, cans, cardboard and plastic can be placed in the same container and we will separate them. Separate containers will be provided by charitable organisations for clothing, shoes and books at specific recycling centres.

Please remember to rinse out glass, cans and plastic containers before recycling them.

Thank you for recycling.

An Introduction to Recycling

Barrow Borough Council is committed to finding alternatives to use of landfill for dealing with the Borough's waste by providing Recycling services and encouraging Householders to Reduce, Reuse and Recycle their waste.

Waste issues are becoming increasingly important in the UK.  In the past the waste management industry of the UK has traditionally pursued the cheapest method of waste disposal, known as land filling.

Barrow will run out of landfill space in less than eight years time, unless we continue to RECYCLE more of our Household waste. If we continue at the present rate it would take less than five years to fill Lake Windermere with Cumbria's household waste.

What Can I Do To Make A Difference?

There are a number of things you, as a Borough resident can do to make a difference.  Firstly, use these web pages to find out how you can RECYCLE your waste in the Barrow area.  The links will give you details of services provided by the Borough Council and where you may take your waste for recycling.

However, there are many ways in which you can help Barrow to divert waste from landfill, not just through recycling.
  • The first thing people should be thinking about is REDUCE the amount of waste that they produce, by shopping responsibly and selecting products which have LESS PACKAGING.
  • Secondly, try to REUSE anything that you can.  Take your carrier bags back to the Supermarket rather than getting new ones and reuse plastic bottles and boxes as far as possible.
  • Thirdly, RECYCLE all of your glass, cans, paper, plastic and cardboard and take part in the kerbside Collection service.
  • Finally if you require recycling containers or any information about the service please contact the recycling team on 01229 876330
