Islands of Barrow Walking Festival 2013

  • Sunday 30th June.  Launch of the Festival: Walk to Piel Island. Meet on  Walney promenade opposite Mr Elephant (for car convoy to Snab Point) at 11 am  or   11.15 m from Snab Point.  A guided walk across the sands from Walney Island to Piel Island organised by Art Gene and led by John Murphy. Learn about the rich maritime and military history, the habitats and wildlife, and the myths and traditions of the Islands of Barrow. On arrival, meet the King and Queen of Piel and view the new art installation, "Seldom Seen," in the Ship Inn. 
  • Tuesday 2nd July. 6 pm Barrow Island Wander – an hours stroll around Barrow Island with Richard Scott meet at Drop-in shop at the corner of Anchor Rd and Island Rd
  • Wednesday 3rd July. South Walney Wanders 9.30 am – 11.30 am Come and see the fantastic wildlife of South Walney Nature Reserve from noisy guls to colourful flowers set against the stunning views of Morecambe Bay.  (3 miles please bring appropriate outdoor clothing)
  • Thursday 4th July. Walney Sunset Ramble 6.45 pm Meet Richard Scott at Earnse Bay Car Park, Walney Island for a walk around North Walney Nature Reserve. (2 1/2 hours rough walking)
  • Sunday 7th July. Westfield Trail 1 pm Miles without Stiles.  Led by John Murphy.  The trail offers contrasting views; across the salt-marsh and mudflats to Piel and Walney islands or to the industrial landscape of Barrow docks. The entire route (5K) is on a hard moderately smooth surface without stiles and suitable for wheelchairs and electric wheelchairs. The start and end point will be from the Cumbria Wildlife Trust Car Park at Rampside.
  • Wednesday 10th July. 11 am Stories behind the Stones  A 60-90 minute walk around Barrow Cemetery led by Rod White, looking at interesting graves and some of the stories about the people: a couple killed by a V1 one week after getting married; a survivor of the shipwreck that made Grace Darling famous; a music hall artiste; an Italian Countess; war victims; victims of accidents.  Parts of the Cemetery can be boggy: wear boots or stout shoes.
    Meet at the entrance to the Cemetery on Devonshire Road
  • Thursday 11th July. Walney Sunset Ramble 6.45 pm Meet Richard Scott at Earnse Bay Car Park, Walney Island for a walk around North Walney Nature Reserve. (2 1/2 hours rough walking)
  • Friday 12th July. 6 pm Evening Walk to Piel Island 6pm meet on Walney promenade opposite Mr Elephant(for car convoy to Snab Point) or 6.15 pm from Snab Point. Stroll across the Sands  with John Murphy.  Meet the King of Piels Island in the Ship Inn where refreshments are available.
  • Sunday 14th July. 1 pm Heritage of Furness Walk meet John Murphy at Furness Abbey Amphitheatre car park for a stroll towards Newton, meander up Dickie Pinks’ Lane to Dalton past Dalton Castle returning to Furness Abbey via The Haggs (5 miles circular)
  • Get on Track Walks on Tuesday 16th July.  Askam Station - Dunnerholme - Kirkby-in-Furness Station Walk starts 10.30am Depart Barrow Station 10.11am train

  • Friday 19th July.  Walney Walk and Widows Crossing 1 pm Meet John Murphy at Dock Museum for a stroll onto Walney Island, along Biggar Bank to Earnse Bay returning via North Scale and Widows Crossing.  National Trust Rangers from Sandscale Haws Nature Reserve will be at the channel at 3pm to explore the channel and to show some of the marine creatures that make their home here.
  • Saturday 20th July. Barrow Wildlife Bonanza Barrow Park 12 – 4pm (meet at The Bandstand) A celebration of Barrow’s local wildlife with lots of free fun activities for all the family.   See the nematode release in the greenhouse.  Mini beast safari, crafts, quizzes, story-telling and much more.
  • Sunday 21st July. 1 pm Piel Walk with John Murphy 1 pm meet on Walney promenade opposite Mr Elephant(for car convoy to Snab Point) or 1.15 pm from Snab Point. Stroll across the Sands  with John Murphy.  Meet the King of Piels Island in the Ship Inn where refreshments are available.

  • Saturday 27th July. Dalton Industrial Heritage Walk. Meet John Murphy at Tudor Square in Dalton at 1 pm to explore the heritage of the Furness Railway and haematite mines and following ancient footpaths
  • Sunday 28th  July. Shore Search Earnse Bay 9.30 – 12 noon  Your chance to learn about the exciting coastal and marine life of the Irish Sea.  Learn new shoreline survey techniques whilst improving your coastal species ID skills (no experience necessary) and do your part for Marine Conservation in the North West.  Sorry no dogs
  • Monday 29th July. Sandscale Haws 1 – 4 pm Celebrate Marine Week with a variety of fun family events including beachcombing, pond dipping, sand sculptures and more. Come along at any time in the afternoon to join in. Activities will be run by National Trust Rangers and Cumbria Wildlife Trust Marine Graduates. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

  • Wednesday 31st July. Whale and Dolphin Watch 6.00 – 8.30 pm  You are invited to take part in a dolphin, whale and porpoise survey for the 12th National Whale and Dolphin watch.  South Walney Nature Reserve.
