Receptionists are fully trained in areas of Council Tax, Council Tax Support and Housing Benefit and would be happy to help any member of the public who wish to visit us at:

Barrow in Furness,
Cumbria,
LA14 2LD.
 
Our busiest days are Monday, Wednesday and Friday. To avoid waiting, customers may choose to come along in person on a Tuesday or Thursday.
Alternatively you may make an appointment by telephoning 01229 404242.  Contact can also be made by email, for benefit/support queries the email address is benefits@barrowbc.gov.uk; and for council tax queries the email address is counciltax@barrowbc.gov.uk

Liberata now have a dedicated telephone team who answer all general enquiries from members of the public.

Benefits Visiting Service

If you wish to claim Benefit/Support or need help or advice regarding Housing Benefit or Council Tax Support (including Benefit overpayments), Liberata offer a Visiting Service providing you are unable to call at the Town Hall in person due to illness, bereavement, disability or are classed as being a vulnerable person. The visiting officer can also check or collect any documents required in connection with your Benefit claim or for Council Tax/Support purposes.

Minicom Service

The Council offers the use of the Minicom service.

This can be located in the following

  • Central Reception  
  • Building Control - Enquires Desk 
  • First Point - Interview box 8 
  • First Point - Desk 1

Final Notice or Summons


Liberata have special technical officers dealing with those customers who wish to make enquiries relating to reminders/summons and would like to make an arrangement to pay any outstanding amounts.

Fraud Hotline

Barrow Borough Council is committed to preventing Fraud.  Members of the public can report Benefit Fraud via our confidential freephone hotline, (anonymously if they prefer). Reports of Benefit fraud will be investigated by Liberata's Fraud section. The Fraud hotline number is : 0800 389 2330

How long will it take to process my Benefit claim?

In January 2013 it took 17.6 days, in February 2013 it took 18.3 days

How long will it take to process my Change in Circumstance?

In January 2013 it took 6.4 days, in February 2013 it  took 5.3 days
