Equality is not about treating everyone the same, it is about everyone having the same opportunities in life and having the same chance to access the services they need.

Diversity is about understanding and respecting people's different needs and aspirations. We cannot achieve equality without addressing diversity.

Barrow Borough Council believes that everyone should be treated fairly and with respect. Our commitment to equal opportunities is set out in our Single Equality Scheme and the action plan associated with it

Our action plan recognises that we still have a long way to go to deliver equality for all, but we already do a lot to deliver equality of opportunity and help people access our services. And we are proud to be recognised by our peers as an 'Achieving' Authority for our progress through the Equality Framework for Local Government.

To deliver our commitment we must be sure that our services are reaching out to everyone in the Borough, and to do that we need to understand the diverse range of people who make different and valuable contributions to life in the area. So we have developed Equality Profiles for some of the groups most likely to face discrimination and disadvantage, and we use these and other sources of information to develop our understanding of the particular equality issues for Barrow Borough.
