The Borough Council has approximately 730 allotment plots located on 17 allotment sites around the Borough, including Walney Island, Barrow and Dalton. Approximately 54 garage bases are located in the Vickerstown area of Walney Island.
 
A standard allotment comprises of 300 square yards and costs £43 for 2010 - 2011. There is no longer a concession for OAPs or people in receipt of benefits. Services include water supply to the allotment lanes and a provision for the removal of rubbish.
 
Allotment Liaison Committee Meetings are held approximately every 3 months, attended by Councillors and a representative from each site. 
 
A waiting list is kept for all sites and the allotments are monitored regularly to ensure a good standard and continuity of service. The average waiting times are as follows although they may vary dependant on allotment turn around:

Allotment inspections are carried out 3 times a year during spring, summer and autumn and allotments that are not being worked are dealt with accordingly. Allotments which become vacant are let as soon as possible, usually within 2-3 weeks, although this may be delayed if work is required to improve the condition of an allotment prior to letting it.
