Barrow Borough Council do not provide general debt counselling services, other than in relation to monies owed to the council by residents. (If you are having difficulty paying Council House Rent or Council Tax you should contact these departments as soon as possible.)

Do you need advice about debt?

The DirectGov web site gives advice on Managing Debt, and advice on Ways out of Debt including how to apply to court for an Individual Voluntary Arrangement (IVAs), where you formally agree to pay part, or all, of your debts over a period of time (typically five years).
 

Are you worried about losing your home, being evicted or becoming homeless?

 
The DirectGov web site gives advice on keeping your home, and also about the Mortgage Rescue Scheme a package introduced to help home owners who are having problems paying their mortgage and are at risk of losing their home.
 
Barrow Borough Council's Housing Service will provide advice and assistance to assist homeless people free of charge and attempt to prevent homelessness whenever possible. Link to Housing Service information about avoiding homelessness.
 

Do you need consumer advice about Financial Products?

The DirectGov web site gives advice on Planning Your Personal Finances as well as How to Shop Around for Financial Products.
