Cumbria County Council's Archive and Records Service
Cumbria Archive Service cares for parish registers, other church
records, wills, electoral registers, maps and plans, poor law
records, title deeds, and photographs. The archives of many
families, businesses, local authorities, solicitors, societies and
schools also help form a fascinating record of all aspects of life
in the county.
Other family history Resources:
The King's Own Royal
Regiment Museum in Lancaster, that holds substantial archives
relating to the Regiment and to many of the men who served with the
King's Own - especially during the First and Second World
Wars.
Additionally, the "Family History Centre" may be of use. The
centre is open Wednesdays to Saturdays, 10am to 4pm, and is free to
members of the public who wish to find out about or trace their
family History. It is located at the Church of Jesus Christ of
Latter-Day Saints, Abbey Road, Barrow in Furness (Tel 01229
820050). The Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter-Day Saints
also operates the Family
Search web site giving free access to the 1881 Census as
well as other genealogical record indexes.
When searching for historical records remember that the Furness
area formed part of the administrative county of Lancashire until
1974, and that Barrow was not a registration district until 1876 -
prior to this the Barrow, Dalton and outlying
villages formed part of the Ulverston registration
district.
The National Archives web
site contains records of the UK Government from Domesday
to the present.
The FreeBMD web site
gives free access to transcribed Civil Registration indexes of
births, marriages and deaths for England and Wales.
Many parish records are listed as part of the Lancashire Online Parish Clerks
Project.
