Over the last 10-15 years,
Barrow's Housing Strategy has consistently adopted a targeted
approach to deal with the sustainability issues for town
centre housing and to meet housing need in the Borough. This
has included the Central Renewal Area, the Heart of Barrow
scheme, Capital Challenge, Hindpool Renewal Area and most recently
the
North Central Renewal Area. Specific
studies carried out such as the Stock Options Appraisal (2004), and
Neighbourhood Renewal Assessment (2005), have driven
intervention in the housing market to address the problems of poor
quality and low demand housing in the town centre wards.
The Council worked through the Furness and West Cumbria
Housing Market Partnership to produce a prospectus for action
in 2005. The Council's delivery focuses on the priority areas
identified in the prospectus. You can
download the prospectus as pdf
documents from this web site.
During 2006, the Council carried out assessments of
housing need and private sector housing conditions. The reports of
the Housing Needs Survey and House Condition Survey can be
downloaded from the links below. An updated House Condition Survey
has been carried out across Cumbria. The survey
work was carried out during 2011, and
a report produced in 2012 which can also be downloaded
from the link below.
As a partner in the
Cumbria Housing Group, Barrow Borough Council has worked with
the other councils in Cumbria, and with the principal
Registered Social Landlords operating
in Cumbria, to produce a Housing Strategy for the county as a
whole. The Cumbria Housing Group forms an integral part
of Cumbrian partnership working and links to other sub
regional bodies such as the Local Enterprise Partnership.
